Trip to the Ulster American Folk Park

On Tuesday 11th March all Y7 class, Mrs Evans, Mr Guy and Miss Irwin went to Omagh to see the Ulster American Folk Park.  At the moment we are reading Wild Flower Girl about the O’Driscol’s family, who live in Castletegart with their aunt Lena.  One day the Land Lord gave Peggy a ticket to go to America.

When we got to the Folk Park, all three classes were divided into 4 groups of 20.   When we were on the Irish side of the park we got to see the old school, an everyday house, Mary’s Kitchen and the Blacksmiths.   While the famine is happening in Ireland a Blacksmith would have open his shop as a soup kitchen.  After, we got on a ship called the Union to see what the Fortunata in Wild flower girl was like for Peggy; it was dark smelly place and crowded with people.

As we got off the other side of the ship, we had a pretend robbery of a bag the guide gave us.  We went to the shop that had everything in it from bird to a post office.  Lots of people couldn’t read or write so the shop keeper will read or write the letter to and from you’re your family.
