We had a fabulous visit to the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh where we were able to bring the book 'Under the Hawthorn Tree' to life by visiting houses which were very similar to what it would have been like during the Famine. The children could smell the turf burning and see the cramped and uncomfortable conditions people had to endure at that time. They also saw what it would have been like to travel on the boat and experience the differences between life in Ireland and America at the same time. The weather was brilliant for us and the children were fantastic. A super day, out of the classroom, was had by all!
