Accelerated Reading is a reading management and monitoring scheme that aims to foster independent reading. The AR software assesses reading age, and suggests books that match pupils' needs and interests. Pupils take computerised quizzes on the books they read and earn points as they progress. Pupils can earn certificates based on how far they progress with the scheme.
Pupils will read for at least 20 minutes each day in school and a further 20 minutes at home. Each week an engagement level target is set. This is usually in and around 20-25minutes.
-Get your child to read to you
-Instil a love of reading by reading along with them
-Focus on their interests
-Ask them questions about their AR book
-Use sticky notes to jot down key events in the story to memorise. This will aid pupil retention.
Each month in Assembly pupils are awarded their AR certificates. In addition, Miss Sleator also awards a child a class certificate each week for working really hard on their reading. The pupil selected gets to wear the AR medal 🥇 for a week. Can you spot anyone you know below?.
