Accelerated Reading

Accelerated Reading (AR)

What Is Accelerated Reading?

Accelerated Reading is provided by Renaissance Learning. It is a computer based programme which begins in Year 5 at Millington and continues throughout Key Stage 2 to the end of Year 7.

How Does It Work?

We are extremely fortunate in Millington to have a designated AR library with leaders who oversee the day to day running of the programme. Children visit the AR library every day, where they choose a book of their own choice within a level that is matched to their reading ability. In class, they take a quiz to assess their comprehension and understanding of their book. Each child is set an individual target of 85, which means they need to be achieving a score of 9 or 10 in order to meet this target. They earn points for each book read and engaged minutes show progress over time.

In class,  approximately thirty minutes is set aside for daily silent reading and this is expected to be supplemented at home so that children are able to change their books frequently,  once a week being the minimum expectation.

What Is Star Reading?

Star Reading is a standardised assessment tool which allows us to measure progress. Questions asked will adapt to responses given, some harder, some easier.

What Is A ZPD?

A zone of proximal development indicates the book range that a pupil will be reading within.
